I am a postdoc who is still considering a career in academia but the funding situation for trainees and postdocs in this country weighs heavily on me. My work expectations and pay as a postdoc feels very exploitative. I am not certain about how I feel to be in a position to make others feel that way in the future. When I have asked current faculty members what their thoughts are on this, they say they understand and that I'll just have to be upfront with future trainees. That doesn't feel like a solution. I don't want to feel like I am in a position of power and exploiting others and expecting them to put their lives on hold. It is a major consideration for continuing on in science in this country.
